Essipong (W/R), Nov. 11, GNA- The Sekondi College (SEKCO), has held its 73rd speech and prize-giving day with a call on stakeholders to propel the College to another level as one of the best second-cycle schools in the country.
Headmistress of the College, Mrs Guddy Abena Ampomah Kermah who made the call, urged the alumni and current students to improve upon the past records of the College.
She was speaking to climax a week-long activity of the 73rd speech and prize-giving day at Essipong in the Essikado-Ketan Constituency of the Western Region.
The 73rd anniversary was on the theme, ” Seven Decades of Holistic Quality Education: Building on The Past, Shaping the Future”.
The 73rd anniversary also coincided with the handing-over of a refurbished clinic by the 2004-year group and a new washroom by the 1974-year group and the 20th-anniversary celebrations of the 2004-year group.
Mrs Ampomah Kermah lauded efforts by four-year groups namely; 1974, 1984, 1994, and 2004 year groups for spearheading the anniversary.
She paid tribute to the founder of the College, Mr J.W. Acquah, for a dream which had grown gems of pride in all facets of national and international endeavours.
Mrs Ampomah Kermah was happy with the improvement in WASSCE results year in, and year out with a 100% pass in the 2023 results.
The Headmistress said the College also won the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Innovation award in the mixed school category of the Western Region.
Mrs Ampomah Kermah said the College had started inclusive education with the admission of three physically challenged students.
She commended efforts by the alumni to refurbish the Chemistry laboratory and appealed to them to renovate the Biology and Physics laboratories to modern standards.
She said the College would never relent in her efforts to inculcate the traditional code of discipline into students to turn out leaders fit for purpose.
The Board Chairman of SEKCO, Nana Kofi Bonah advised the College to adapt to the changing landscape in education with 21st century skills and competencies.
Nana Kofi Bonah who is the Chief of Essipong, urged the College to provide a holistic education which focused on critical thinking, problem-solving and moulding of character to prepare students who could navigate complex global issues, leverage knowledge, and drive positive change.
She tasked the alumni to mentor current students of the College with their rich experience for them to also make a greater impact on the College.
The Board Chairman lauded award winners and urged them to thrive for greater heights as they adapt to the changing landscape in education.
Nana Bonah charged the College to promote holistic education, critical thinking, and character training to navigate the complex global issues in the 21st century.
Captain Georgina Joppa Maritime Expert and Consultant, who was the guest speaker, commended the Board and Management for bringing the school to a higher pedestal.
She noted that the College had grown from strength to strength with dedicated staff and hardworking students.
Ms Georgina Bus-Kwofie, an old girl of the College formerly known also lauded the resilience of the alumni to complement the efforts of the government to bring the College to an appreciable standard.
She threw the challenge to the current students to work extra hard to achieve results that would put the College in an enviable position.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for Essikado-Ketan Constituency, Mr Charles Bissue advised students of the College to gird their loins and put the College on a higher pedestal.
He pledged to support the College with 50 double beds and 10 street bulbs.
