SA maintains Rugby Africa Women’s Seven Tittle in Accra

Accra, Nov. 11, GNA – The South Africa (SA) Women’s team (The Springbok Women’s Sevens) defeated Kanya 19-10 points to maintain the 2024 Rugby Africa Women’s Sevens championship held at the University of Ghana Rugby Stadium in Accra.   

It was the Kenyans who took the lead in the first half, but the point was cancelled by South African’s Felicia Jacobs. 

However, host Ghana came seventh, whereas Uganda picked the third place with Mauritius placing fourth. 

Speaking to the media, Mr. Herbert Mensah, the President of Rugby Africa expressed gratitude to the government of Ghana for the support.  

He said, “I want to thank the President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo for his intervention in making this tournament possible”. 

He said Africa had never played 12 female team in Rugby Sevens Africa competition before, but Ghana had done it for the first time. 

He said, “without the understanding and vision of the President of the Republic this tournament would not have been possible. 

“We brought in athletes, officials, supporters, about two hundred people in Ghana for the tournament and it shows that we have the level of hospitality that is unique in the country.” 

He said the Africa Rugby Association is aimed at developing the sport on the continent in terms of infrastructures, organising tournament among others. 

He said, “in Africa, we are looking for more nations who are prepared in developing the game”.”
