Kumasi, Nov 23, GNA – Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, Paramount Chief of the Sefwi Anhwiaso Traditional Area, has been re-elected as President of the National House of Chiefs (NHC).

He secured 42 out of the 73 valid votes cast to beat his main contender, Oseadeayo Agyeman Badu II, paramount chief of Dormaa traditional area, who had 30 votes.

One ballot was rejected.

Buipewura Abdullai Jinapor II, emerged as the Vice President after securing 54 votes to beat three other contestants; Nana Soglo Alo IV, Okotweresuo Kantamanso Oworae and Yelezoya Asaba

The election process encountered initial obstacles when a Deputy Registrar informed the House that two lawsuits had been filed, seeking to restrain the election from proceeding.

Additionally, a standoff ensued as some members insisted that the House be formally constituted and its members sworn in before voting commenced.

After extensive deliberations, the members resolved the deadlock by voting on whether the election should proceed or not.

Forty-eight (48) members voted in favour for the elections to go ahead while 24 voted against in the election supervised by the officials from the Electoral Commission in the Ashanti regional.

Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II’s re-election solidifies his leadership of the National House of Chiefs at a time when traditional authority continues to play a pivotal role in Ghana’s governance and socio-economic development.
