NPP, NDC sign pact at Gushegu for peaceful elections

Gushegu (N/R), Nov. 26, GNA – The New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Gushegu Constituency of the Northern Region have signed a peace pact to promote sustainable peace before, during and after the 2024 general election in the area.

They also resolved to preserve the prevailing peace in the area by ensuring that they prioritised tolerance over violence in their political activities.

They also agreed that they would resort to constitutional and legal means to address their grievances on all issues pertaining to the elections as well as encourage their supporters to desist from perpetrating violence.

Mr Abdulai Alhassan, the NPP Chairman of the Gushegu Constituency, and Alhaji Mahama Asimana, the NDC Chairman, Gushegu Constituency, signed the pact on behalf of their Parliamentary Candidates for the area at Gushegu.

It was facilitated by the Northern Regional Peace Council as part of series of engagements for some selected hotspot constituencies in the region, which is funded by the United Nations Development Programme and the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office.

The ceremony was attended by representatives of both NPP and NDC, Electoral Commission, National Commission for Civic Education, security agencies, traditional leaders amongst others.

Father Thaddeus Kuusah, the Executive Secretary, Northern Regional Peace Council, said it was to help guide the conduct of the political parties and their supporters to promote peace in the country.

He said it was also to encourage political tolerance and consensus building amongst the parties as well as promote decency in the media space.

He urged the parties to stick to the terms of the peace pact to help consolidate the country’s democratic credentials.

Superintendent of Police, Mr Thomas Tulasi, Gushegu Municipal Police Commander, said the security agencies were ready to provide the needed security for the elections and appealed to the parties to cooperate with the security agencies to promote sustainable peace.
