Accra, Nov.17, GNA – The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly condemned the recent personal attacks against former President John Agyekum Kufuor by certain members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In a statement issued by the party’s National Organiser, Mr. Henry Nana Boakye, the party expressed deep outrage over the derogatory remarks made by Dela Edem, a member of the NDC’s National Communications Team and a Campaign Aide to former President John Mahama, during a television interview.
In the interview, Edem referred to President Kufuor as “evil” and claimed that he had been “cursed” to remain in a wheelchair.
The NPP described these comments as “despicable, shameful, and disgraceful” and expressed strong disapproval, calling them unwarranted personal insults aimed at a respected statesman.
The NPP also criticized the silence of John Mahama, the NDC’s presidential candidate in the 2024 election, and his party’s leadership following the offensive comments.
The Party said that Mr. Mahama’s failure to address the issue and take disciplinary action against his aide could be interpreted as tacit approval of the insults.
The NPP warned that this could further inflame tensions and create an unhealthy political atmosphere ahead of the upcoming December elections.
“If Mr. Mahama and the NDC continue to keep mute on this matter days after such horrible utterances, then we can conclude that Mr. Mahama and the NDC are in full support of such shameful utterances, which may set the stage for an avoidable pollution of the political atmosphere ahead of the December polls,” it said.
The statement also reminded Dela Edem and the NDC of former President Kufuor’s significant contributions to Ghana’s development.
These included the introduction of programmes such as the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), School Feeding Programme, Capitation Grant, Free Maternal Care, and Metro Mass Transport, which have had lasting benefits for the Ghanaian people.
The party emphasized that President Kufuor continues to be a revered figure both in Ghana and internationally.
It called on former President Mahama to publicly condemn the comments made by his aide and to issue an apology to President Kufuor, stressing that the former president’s legacy should be respected and protected from baseless attacks.
