Karaga (N/R), Nov 29, GNA – The Karaga District Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has engaged youth groups in the area to improve their knowledge and attitude on peaceful coexistence, tolerance and non-violence.
The day’s event, held at Karaga, formed part of the Preventing and Containing Violent Extremism project, which is funded by the European Union.
Participating youth groups included Karaga Youth Centre, Attaya Youth for Development, Young Peace Ambassadors, Concerned Youth, Beimony Cultural Youth, Cama/Camfed Ladies and Youth Parliament.
Mr Osman Mahama, Karaga District Director, NCCE, speaking during the event, reminded the youth about the threat posed by extremists to the security of the country hence the event.
Chief Superintendent Mr Peter Adjei, Karaga District Police Commander, emphasised the importance of peace saying it was the foundation of every community and even if a community had all social amenities but failed to be peaceful, no one could enjoy the amenities.
He urged the youth to embrace peace as the country approached this year’s elections saying embracing peace especially during this election period was key in the fight against violent extremism since political violence was one of the main drivers of violent extremism.
Reverend Jeln Joseph Kofi, who was also a resource person, urged the youth to be mindful of their utterances since words could sometimes be very dangerous.
He also urged them not to engage in misinformation and disinformation because they led to violence.
Mr Samuel Akuamoah, Deputy Chairperson, NCCE, encouraged the youth to come out and vote on the election day since high voter turnout gave credibility to the elections.
