Tempane (U/E), Nov 29, GNA – The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has held an engagement with political party youth activists in the Tempane District in the Upper East Region.
The engagement with the political party activists drawn from the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) aimed at promoting peace and tolerance as the country gears towards the December 7, 2024, general election.
It formed part of the European-sponsored project dubbed “Preventing and Containing Violent Extremism (PCVE)” being implemented by the NCCE.
Mr Martin Mumuni, the Tempane District Director of the NCCE, in his welcome address, said the engagement with the political Activists was to raise awareness of the dangers of violent extremism and promote peaceful coexistence and tolerance ahead of the elections.
He said mostly the political youth party activists were at the forefront of political activities, and it was important they understood the risks of engaging in or endorsing violence, sharing misinformation and engaging in hate speech which could hinder the peace of the country.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Isaac Adu, the Tempane District Commander of the Ghana Police Service, urged the political party activists to uphold the democratic values of the country and help the security services to combat crime.
He underscored the need for them to participate peacefully in the electoral process and emphasised the need for them to reject violence in all its forms and report suspicious characters in their communities to the security agencies to ensure a harmonious environment.
Mr Joseph Atule from the Christian Council of Ghana called on the youth to prioritise peace before, during, and after the elections to propel the development of the country.
He said one either loses or wins in an election, and it was important that they accepted the outcomes of the polls, regardless of whichever party won, to ensure peace.
“We are one people with a shared destiny and fighting each other undermines the progress we all seek,” he added.
