Chinderi (O/R), Nov. 19, GNA – Mr Abass Yussif, the Krachi Nchumuru District Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has called on the youth to help strengthen Ghana’s democracy by changing the political discourse of the country.
He said they could do so by exhibiting a high sense of tolerance in their political engagements.
Mr Yussif was speaking during a day’s engagement with youth activists of the political parties in Chinderi of the Oti Region.
He said the engagement was intended to promote peace and tolerance in the upcoming general elections and beyond.
He urged the youth to promote the political discourse and also be cognizance of the fact that the 1992 Constitution gave every eligible citizen, the right and freedom to register as a voter.
Mr Yussif said the Constitution also gave citizens the right to form or join a political party, hence no one had to be discriminated against or should suffer from others in exercising their right.
He called on the youth to desist from politics of insults and character assassination but understand the manifestos and campaign messages of their political parties and campaign on them to the electorate.
Pastor Peter Ato Hanson, Chinderi District Pastor, Church of Pentecost, admonished the youth to be tolerant of diverging views since not all would also go well with their political parties or candidates.
He called on supporters of the various political parties to exhibit a high sense of tolerance to promote the country’s democracy.
Mr Robert Boame, Oti Regional Director, NCCE, asked the youth not to allow themselves to be influenced in ways that could make them develop hatred for others no matter their tribe, religion and political party.
He said violent extremist groups were working with countries surrounding Ghana, which called for collaborative work to prevent such groups.
Mr Boame urged communities to be on alert and report strangers with suspicious character to their leaders.
The engagement was a collaboration between the Commission and the European Union (EU).
