Kumasi, Nov. 20, GNA – MTN Ghana has since 2021 supported the Ministry of Communication and Digitalisation with GH¢15.6 million in the implementation of its Girls in ICT Programme across the country.
The company’s support has helped train 10,000 girls and 1,000 teachers in basic ICT skills such as coding, website design, game development, and animation development.
Ms. Sophia Tandoh of the Corporate Affairs of MTN Ghana, disclosed this on the sidelines of the National Girls in ICT celebration in Kumasi, which is being implemented by the Communication Ministry and its partners.
The event was the climax of a three-week training for 1000 girls and 100 teachers in basic ICT skills in the region.
The best 100 girls who distinguished themselves during the training received laptops and certificate of participation, with the best three girls receiving cash prizes and citations in addition.
Ten-year-old Success Jocelyn Dadzie from Hwediem M/A Primary School in the Asante-Akim North District, who emerged the overall best received thunderous applause from her fellow trainees as she walked to the podium for her award.
Ms Tandoh reaffirmed MTN Ghana’s commitment to promote participation of girls in the digital space as a company.
That is why the company has been supporting the initiative by the Ministry to provide ICT skills for young girls since 2021, she noted.
“When the Ministry brought the initiative on board, MTN was quick to jump on to offer its support to the fullest, and so since 2021 till date the business has supported the Ministry with 15.6 million,” she stated.
She applauded the Ministry for the laudable initiative which she said could shape the career path of the girls.
She was hopeful that the programme would ignite the interest of the girls in the ICT space to bridge the gender gap in the field.
“As a business, we are happy to associate ourselves with the programme and we will continue to support the Ministry to ensure that all the necessary support that these girls need to be able to see themselves in the ICT field and bridge the gender gap are provided,” she assured.
