Moscow sees ‘positive signals’ from Trump election

Moscow, Nov 10, (dpa/GNA) – Donald Trump’s election as US president, sends out “positive signals,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in Moscow on Sunday.

“During his campaign, Trump spoke of achieving things through deals, that he could make a deal that would lead to peace,” Peskov said.

“At least he is talking about peace. He’s not talking about confrontation, he’s not talking about wanting to deal Russia a strategic defeat. And that distinguishes him in a favourable way from the current administration,” Peskov added.

During the US campaign, Russian President Vladimir Putin said President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were better for Russia, as they made predictable policies.

Peskov said Trump was less predictable, and for that reason, it still had to be seen whether he would make good on his announcements from the campaign.

Putin offered his congratulations to Trump on Thursday. Moscow observers believe the two could speak by phone before Trump’s inauguration on January 20. Putin has made known his readiness to resume contact with the United States.

Putin and Biden have not spoken since the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and diplomatic relations have hit a low.

This year there has been contact at a lower level over the exchange of prisoners, and military leaders continue to have occasional contact.

Trump has long insisted that he could rapidly end the war in Ukraine, possibly before inauguration day.
