Monk killed, three injured in monastery attack in eastern Spain

Madrid, Nov 9, (dpa/GNA) – A monk has been killed in a monastery, in the small town of Gilet near Valencia, in eastern Spain.

Three other clergy members were injured in the attack at the Santo Espíritu del Monte (Holy Spirit of the Mountain) monastery, by an unknown assailant who has escaped, the news agency Europa Press and other Spanish media reported on Saturday, citing the Civil Guard police unit.

The reports said a search for the perpetrator was under way, and he was believed to be hiding in the surrounding mountains.

A spokesman for the archdiocese of Valencia told Europa Press that the perpetrator, broke into the monastery in the morning and attacked the clergy members in their rooms.

In total, seven clergy members were attacked. It was reported that the deceased was 76 years old. The ages of the three injured were given as 57, 66 and 95.

No details were initially provided regarding possible motives for the crime. It was also not disclosed whether the assailant used weapons during the attack.
