Krachi (VR), Nov. 09, GNA – The Krachi West Municipality of the Oti region has welcomed Mr Amadu Sumaila, a 40-year-old farmer who has been named the 2024 overall best farmer in the area.
Mr Sumaila rears 300 cattle, 120 Sheep, 50 goats and has 17 acres of maize, 10 acres of cassava, seven acres of rice and he for his prize, he received a tricycle, wellington boots and cutlasses.
There was a total of seventeen farmers who also received various awards on the 40th National farmers day celebration.
Mr Sumail applauded the government and the Department of Agriculture for the support given to Ghanaian farmers, to acknowledge their hard work and effort towards preserving the nation’s food basket and other raw materials for trade and industry.
He advised the youth in the area to take farming seriously saying, “Farming is a business without a total loss”.
Mr Sumaila, however, complained about the scarcity of water for farming being a huge challenge in the area, and to appeal to the government to help provide farmers with irrigation dams and pumps to address the crises for farmers in the area.
The theme for this year’s National farmer’s day celebration was: “Building Climate Resilient Agriculture for sustainable food security”.
Mr Atta Adusei Brown, the Krachi West Municipal Director of Agriculture, stated that climate change is globally causing increased temperature and prolonged drought, making it difficult for farmers to effectively engage in planting.
He urged farmers in the area to invest in irrigation farming, to help address the hurdles of drought seasons for safe cultivation.
Mr Emmanuel Kajal Lalula, the Municipal Chief Executive, congratulated the awardees and encouraged the youth to go into agriculture.
