Yung Duuni (N/R), Nov 15, GNA – The Northern Regional Command of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has launched its 2024 anti-bushfire campaign at Yung Duuni, a farming community in the Sagnarigu Municipality of the Northern Region.

It is to intensify awareness creation on the causes, effects, risks and how to prevent bushfires in the country, especially in the dry season, which is usually described as fire season.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer II (ACFOII) Mr Franklin Masiku, Northern Regional Fire Commander, whose speech was read on his behalf during the launch, explained that the campaign was part of the GNFS’ plans to ensure that farm produce was protected during and after this year’s harmattan season.

He called for strong collaboration amongst the GNFS, the traditional authorities, and the various District Assembly authorities to support the campaign to achieve its intended purpose.

He said the strategy for this year’s campaign focused on vigorous and effective public education with the spotlight on the causes, the effects, and how to prevent or minimise bush fires in communities.

He appealed to the public to desist from engaging in all forms of bush burning and urged them to report people, who engaged in bush burning to the traditional authorities, the District Assemblies, or the Police for the law to deal with them.

Mr Mohammed Yakubu Ahmed, Sagnarigu Municipal Chief Executive, pledged the support of the Assembly towards the campaign to ensure its success.
