Accra, Nov. 07, GNA – The Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO), a non- government organisation (NGO), in collaboration with the Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly (LEKMA) has launched the “Zero Waste for Sustainable Cityscape Project.”

The project is aimed at creating awareness within the public on proper waste management and segregation techniques in the municipality.

The GAYO is a youth-led gender-balanced advocacy group that focuses largely on environmental sustainability and community development to carry out research and provide solutions to pressing environmental issues through youth empowerment, skills development and public education.

Mr. Jacob Johnson Attakpah, the Project Manager, who unveiled the project said GAYO’s goal was to establish an institutional mechanism for youth engagement in climate change policy and disaster risk reduction while supporting public, private and informal waste management stakeholders to maximize the potential of zero waste in urban communities.

He said the collaboration would address social and environmental challenges and improve waste management and air pollution in the municipality.

Mr. Attakpah said the organisation would provide expertise and resources for the delivery of the project while partnering the assembly to formulate and design an effective waste collection framework that supports the livelihood of target groups and small and medium scale enterprises.

“GAYO and LEKMA will work closely to conduct research on waste material within the assembly which will be published as literature as well as establish a buyback centre for waste collection and recycling,” he said.

He said the partnership would support the assembly to expand its efforts in sensitization and awareness creation on waste management and open burning and finance the production of learning materials and the cost of such sensitization efforts.

He added that this would help identify and support young entrepreneurs operating in a sound waste management sector and scale the activities of such enterprises.

Mr. Mordecal Quarshie, the Municipal Chief Executive for Ledzokuku, expressed gratitude to the leadership of GAYO, emphasizing the positive impact the Zero Waste for Sustainable Cityscape Project would bring to the municipality.

He urged the people within the area to support the project and help provide good sanitation in the area.
