Zuarungu, Nov 8, GNA – Rev. Apotogse John Akolgo, a 52 year old man, has been adjudged the overall Best Farmer in the Bolga East District in Upper East Region.
He took home as part of his award on Farmers Day an Apsonic Motor King tricycle, a pair of Wellington boots, one bag of fertilizer and 2 cutlasses.
Earlier, farmers, public officials and the chiefs and people of the Bolgatanga East District started the 2024 Farmers Day celebration with prayers and pouring of libation at Zuarungu.
Ghana observes Farmers Day to honour its famers for the vital role that they play in the country’s economy and to recogniee their hard work and contributions to national food security, economic growth, and sustainable development.
The day, usually celebrated on the first Friday of December each year, was established in 1985 in response to a severe drought in the early 1980s, which heavily impacted the country’s agriculture.
Despite the drought, Ghanaian farmers worked hard to sustain food production, making an impressive recovery that motivated the government to officially recognise their resilience and dedication.
Farmers Day also serves as an opportunity to celebrate achievements in agriculture, promote sustainable practices, and encourage more people to engage in farming and agribusiness.
