Accra, Nov. 15, GNA – The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has pledged to ensure gender parity in governance by appointing fifty percent women to its cabinet if elected in the December 7 polls.
At the launch of its manifesto in Accra, the party outlined a comprehensive vision for Ghana’s economic development, with a focus on industrial growth and inclusive policies.
The manifesto is on the theme: “Ghana’s Industrial Rebirth – A New Economic Order of Ownership.”
Mrs. Hajia Hamidatu, former Acting Chairperson of the CPP, emphasised the importance of gender equality in leadership and assured that the party would uphold this principle upon gaining voter support.
“We will go according to all the protocols and conventions that we have signed. If it’s 50%, our cabinets will be 50-50,” she stated and highlighted the party’s historical role in promoting women’s participation in politics.
“The CPP has consistently broken barriers for women in politics. We are the first party to have a female national organiser, general secretary, chairperson, and now a female flagbearer,” she said.
Mrs. Hamidatu criticized Ghana’s failure to fully implement international gender representation protocols, highlighting the need for change.
She outlined several women-focused policies, including extending maternity leave to six months and introducing one-month paternity leave.
Mrs. Hamidatu said the CPP would establish workplace crèches in ministries to support working mothers.
Drawing on the legacy of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, she reminded the gathering of the 1965 Representation Act, which set quotas for women in Parliament.
“We are not just making promises; we are following a tradition of concrete action for women’s empowerment,” she emphasised.
The CPP also announced plans to fully implement the recently passed Affirmative Action Bill and provide women with access to soft loans through various initiatives.
“We are very happy when at the long wait, the Affirmative Action Bill has been passed into law. The CPP will implement from page one to the last of the recommendations that were made in the affirmative action bill that was passed by the parliament of this country,” she stated.
Mrs. Hamidatu urged the electorate to vote for the Party’s female Presidential Candidate, Nana Frimpomaa Sarpong Kumankumah on election day.
