Aminata: Insightful stage drama encourages pupils to speak about abuse

Accra, Nov. 1, GNA – Members of EA Production crew brought to life an enthralling stage play titled “Aminata”, drawing attention to sexual abuse, HIV and the need to protect children.

The show, at the Arts Centre in Accra, attracted pupils from Sap’s School, Teshie, who expressed delight at the insightful and educative drama.

It was written, directed and produced by Ms Evelyn Asare, a graduate of the University of Ghana School of Performing Arts.

“Aminata” tells the story of a young girl who endured abuse and hardship after she moved from her village to live with her grandmother in Accra.

According to the plot, the teenager harboured a sexual assault that “shattered her spirit and left her with HIV”.

Despite adversities, the lead character, “Aminata”, managed to find her voice and revealed the “dark secret”.

The well-crafted narrative, in addition to other themes, emphasised the impact of rape, neglect, and stigma.

“This powerful play is a profound exploration of resilience, injustice, and the critical need for society to protect its children,” Ms Asare stated after the show.

“Our primary goal is to empower students with the knowledge and courage to speak up if they find themselves in such situations.

“Recognising the potential link between abuse and increased vulnerability to HIV and AIDS, we believe this is an opportunity to raise awareness and educate students about both issues,” she added.

Ms Nadia Sari Iddrisu, who played the lead role, shared her experience on stage, and urged young people to speak up about any form of abuse.

She was hopeful to take up other challenging acting roles in future, and advised parents and guardians to treat their wards kindly.

Mr Lambert Senyo Dzah, the Production Manager, praised his team for an exceptional delivery and called for individual and corporate support for future events.

He highlighted the success of previous productions like “The Exam” and “What Mummy Doesn’t Know”, promising to release other exciting contents next year.

The show included a health awareness and interactive session, where a Public Health Nurse educated the pupils about disease prevention, contraction, and management.
