Accra, Oct 25, GNA – The General Officer Commanding (GOC) Northern Command, Brigadier General Frank Nartey Tei, has urged uniformed personnel to avoid stigmatizing friends and family members diagnosed with breast cancer.
He emphasised the importance of empathy and support, particularly for female relatives and friends facing the challenge.
Speaking at a breast cancer awareness programme for the Six Garrison of the Ghana Army, Brig. Gen. Tei highlighted the suffering caused by the disease to individuals, families, and communities.
He noted that stigma held negative consequences for cancer survivors, affecting their health outcomes.
Brig. Gen. Tei pointed out that empathy and support for cancer patients was crucial during their treatment journey.
He stated that increased social support helped individuals cope better with the disease, reinforcing the importance of community and family involvement in their recovery.
Brig. Gen. Tei underscored the need for proactive health measures to significantly improve outcomes for those affected by breast cancer.
He urged uniformed personnel to prioritize early testing and care and reinforced the importance of timely intervention in the fight against the disease.
The event, held under the theme “Screen Early, Live Longer, Join the Fight,” included a health walk, educational talks, and breast screenings.
It aimed to raise awareness about breast cancer and encourage early detection among participants.
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers and is the second leading cause of cancer deaths, particularly among females, worldwide.
Its prevalence highlights the urgent need for awareness, early detection, and effective treatment options.
