Keta attains more than 100 per cent on polio vaccination

Keta (VR), Oct 22, GNA- Keta Municipal Health Directorate in the Volta Region has vaccinated a total of 14,790 children against poliomyelitis disease within the area.

The polio vaccination exercise, which commenced on October 17 to 20, has targeted 14,730 children from age zero to five.

Madam Dora Kugbonu, the Public Health Promotion Officer, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, stated that the move was to curb any form of polio disease in the area.

“Our target was to vaccinate a total number of 14,730 children within the age range, but l can tell you that our teams have worked above our limit and expectations. Thanks to all health workers and volunteers who helped us achieve this,” she stated.

Madam Kugbonu added that the Directorate had administered a total of 14,790, which exceeded the target of 14,730, representing more than a hundred per cent achievement.

She said thorough investigations also indicated that about 60 children within the municipality were unable to participate in the exercise and the directorate would have all necessary measures to get them vaccinated.

“We need to appreciate the collaborative efforts of some individuals which include our volunteer health workers, teachers, parents, and others who helped us to achieve this milestone.”

Madam Kugbonu disclosed that the second phase of the polio vaccination would take place from November 14 to 17, to children under five years to boost their immune system against the polio disease.

She urged the public to get all children vaccinated against polio and any other diseases to avoid any sudden paralysis or limb weakness among the young ones for better future.

Madam Kugbonu emphasized that the polio vaccines had been tested and approved nationwide and were deemed safe and all should help in the campaign.

She said polio had no cure and the vaccination was the only approved method to suppress the disease.
