Italy criminalizes seeking surrogacy abroad

Rome, Oct. 17, (dpa/GNA) – Italy’s ultraconservative government on Wednesday passed a law making it illegal for people to seek surrogacy abroad in order to have a baby.

The Italian Senate approved the bill by 84 votes to 58.

The right-wing coalition of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said the ban was a way to protect the traditional family.

But critics say the law deprives homosexual or infertile couples from having children.

Surrogacy is already illegal in Italy. The new law bans people from seeking surrogacy in countries where it is legal.

Surrogacy refers to a woman carrying a child to term for others and giving it to them after the child’s birth.

In some countries, surrogacy is permitted with certain restrictions.
