Israel warns displaced Lebanese not to return home amid fresh strikes

Beirut, Oct , (dpa/GNA) – Israel on Saturday, warned displaced Lebanese refugees, not to return to their homes, as security sources in Lebanon said overnight attacks, targeted a Palestinian refugee camp in the port city of Tripoli.

With the first anniversary of the October 7 attacks on Israel that precipitated the escalating crisis in the Middle East fast approaching, the fighting in Lebanon shows no sign of abating, days after the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched a ground offensive, targeting the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia.

Southern Lebanon continues to be the main target of the Israeli operation, with an IDF spokesman calling on displaced residents to refrain from returning home, in a post on the social media platform X.

Meanwhile, Lebanese security sources said a drone struck an apartment in a refugee camp for Palestinians near Tripoli. Deaths and injuries have been reported.

Israeli attacks were also recorded in southern suburbs of the capital Beirut, as well as the eastern Bekaa valley. The IDF is yet to comments on the reports.

The offensive in Lebanon, prompted Iran to launch a barrage of missiles at Israel earlier this week.

Israeli attacks have continued in the Gaza Strip, long controlled by the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

Early on Saturday, the IDF said it hit a Hamas command centre in a former school building in central Gaza, in what it called another example of the group’s systematic misuse of civilian infrastructure, in violation of international law.

Measures had been taken before the attack to reduce the risk to civilians, the IDF said. The information could not be independently verified.
