Death toll rises above 60 after storms in Spain, rescue continues

Madrid, Oct. 30, (dpa/GNA) – At least 62 people have now died after severe storms hit large parts of Spain, the Spanish state broadcaster RTVE reported on Wednesday, citing the authorities.

Media also reported the death of an 88-year-old woman in the city of Cuenca in the central Castilla-La-Mancha region. Dozens of people are also reported missing.

Rescue workers struggled to reach the disaster-stricken areas due to flooded or blocked roads.

In the particularly hard-hit Mediterranean region of Valencia, much of the relief work is therefore being conducted by helicopter, José Miguel Basset of the Valencia fire brigade told the news agency Europa Press.

The rain front is expected to move north-east today. However, a severe weather warning remains in place for large parts of the country.

According to the meteorological service AEMET, the situation in Spain will not completely ease until Thursday.
