Accra, Oct. 18, GNA – The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has donated 1,500 dual desks to be shared among three selected basic schools in the educational district of Accra to improve teaching and learning.

The annual presentation forms parts of efforts by the AMA to support teaching and learning in schools in the metropolis.

Mrs Elizabeth Sackey, the Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive who presented the furniture, said it had been the priority of the Assembly to make teaching and learning comfortable for students, hence the donation.

“We undertake this activity yearly to support the education system, to ensure that students have access to desks and other educational materials to make them comfortable in their learning,” she stated.

She urged the authorities of the beneficiary schools to ensure a good maintenance culture.

“It is essential to teach the children how to maintain these desks, as this will instill a sense of responsibility in them. I have engaged the Circuit Supervisors through the Metro Education Director to ensure they emphasis the need for proper maintenance,” she said.

Mrs Sackey gave the assurance that more educational projects would be undertaken by the Assembly.

Mrs Justine Ivy Apawu, the Accra Metro Education Director, who received the desks on behalf of the schools, commended the AMA for its efforts and gave the assurance that the items would be distributed to the schools.

She enumerated that: “Last year, the AMA gave us a significant number of desks, and this year, they have increased the support due to the rising student admissions. This would help the students to sit more comfortably and maintain focus during teaching”.

Mrs Apaw expressed gratitude to the Accra Mayor, for her prompt response to the educational needs of the schools, citing the provision of transportation during the Basic Education Certificate Examination period.
