Accra, Oct 29, GNA – The Electoral Commission has given the Ghana Freedom Party 10 days to nominate a new presidential candidate for the 2024 Election.
This follows the passing of the Party’s flagbearer, Madam AkuaDonkor, on Monday, October 28, 2024.
The Commission, in a statement signed by Mr Samuel Tettey, a Deputy Chair in charge of Operations, said this was in accordance with Article 50 (4) of the 1992 Constitution.
“While the 1992 Constitution and the Public Elections Regulations, 2020, C.I. 127, are not clear on processes to follow in the event of the death of a Presidential Candidate, Article 50 (4) of the 1992 Constitution provides as follows; “where at the close of nominations, but before the election, one of the candidates dies, a further period of ten days shall be allowed for nominations…”
The Commission added that it had, in the meantime, suspended the printing of presidential ballot papers, which was near completion.
Madam Akua Donkor was number three on the ballot paper.
She died at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital in Accra after a short illness.
She was 72.
