Ada, Oct. 25, GNA – One person is reported to have died from cholera in the Ada East District following 43 confirmed cases in three districts in the Greater Accra Region.
Out of the 43 confirmed cholera cases, Ada East accounted for 37, Ada five from Ada West, five, with Kpone-Katamanso confirming one case.
The information was contained in a “Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate Cholera Outbreak-Situational Report No. 11,” made available to the Ghana News Agency (GNA).
The Report indicated that out of the 43 confirmed cases, 22 were females, with 21 being males and that the affected persons their ages cut across age one to above 50 years old.
The situational report indicated that cholera, which was an acute diarrhoea disease caused by an infection with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, hit the Ada East and West Districts initially with six confirmed cases.
It traced the cause to the main source of drinking water for the affected communities in the Ada East and Ada West districts, which included uncovered wells, boreholes, and contaminated sachet water.
The affected areas were also identified to have poor sanitation with open defecation and indiscriminate waste disposal in the communities, due to limited access to toilet facilities and waste disposal sites.
It said the total number of suspected cases as of October 22, 2024, was 284 while 802 contacts had been identified, with 581 having completed five days’ mandatory follow-up and 221 still under the process, with none developing symptoms.
