Somanya (E/R), Sept. 04, GNA-Mr Eric Tetteh, the Municipal Chief Executive for Yilo Krobo, has praised the potential impact of the earthmoving equipment under the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP).
He expressed the belief that the equipment would greatly benefit the development and expansion of the assembly’s road infrastructure.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mr. Tetteh highlighted the importance of the equipment in reshaping and constructing roads in the municipality.
He mentioned that for many years, the assembly had primarily focused on reshaping its inner roads, which had changed the surface of the roads.
However, with this new equipment, the Assembly could now take advantage of local expertise to effectively gravel its roads.
The new initiative would also help address the issue of delayed government payments to contractors, which could drive up construction costs and lead to delays.
According to Mr. Tetteh, since 31 of the 44 electoral areas that make up the municipality are in rural areas, where poor road conditions have a significant impact on food prices, the initiative is particularly timely.
He said the Assembly had designated Akpo and Trawa communities for road development as part of its efforts to improve infrastructure.
Mr. Prosper T. Obuor, Municipal Engineer, told Ghana News Agency in an interview, that the initiative would greatly aid in improving road conditions in the municipality.
“In order to ensure the programme’s sustainability and the maintenance of the expensive equipment, DRIP’s management should be depoliticized and left in the hands of technocrats,” he said.
DRIP was inaugurated on July 31, 2024, with the goal of strengthening road infrastructure throughout the country’s districts by decentralizing road development.
This would enable every part of the country to receive high-quality road infrastructure.
The programme also aims to provide Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies with the resources and equipment needed to rebuild and maintain roads within their own jurisdictions.
