Senior citizens to be celebrated Saturday, October 5, to mark UN designated Day

Accra, Sept. 30, GNA – In commemoration of this year’s International Day of Older People (IDOP), 5thSense Strategies, a communications and events management company, in collaboration with the Aviation Social Centre, will treat some aged people to a variety of fun activities, on Saturday, October 5.

IDOP, set aside by the United Nations, is observed October 1, every year, to change the negative stereotypes and misconceptions about ageing and to allow older persons to continue to contribute to their societies.

This year’s event is themed: “Ageing with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide.”

Thus, “Seniors’ Day Out” at the Aviation Social Centre aims to “celebrate the vibrant spirit of older folks in a fun-filled [environment],” the organisers said in a statement copied to Ghana News Agency.

Scheduled to take place between 0900 hours and 1600 hours, the celebration targets retirees, pensioners associations and Old School Groups whose members are 60 years old and above.

It would feature exciting games and contests, gentle exercises and aerobics, free health screening, self-care services and wellness activities.

“There will also be live band music and dance, seniors reflexology and massages, morning refreshment and buffet lunch, hydration stations, fruit juice and local bar, beer garden, liquor and cocktail bar.

Nana Adwoa Kwegyir-Aggrey, Event Director, said: “There will be something for everybody” on the occasion.

Mrs Abigail Sappor, General Manager, Aviation Social Centre said, the facility “is poised to welcome all 60-year-olds for an exciting time.”

“As partners with 5thSense Strategies, we consider the Seniors’ Day Out as an opportunity to make our older persons know that there is a place away from home where they can come to at any time.”

“Last year, through the collaborative efforts of our partners, we hosted more than 450 lively older people.

The activities for this year have been carefully selected to meet their needs during the seven hours that they will be with us,” she stated.

Dr. Esi Ansah, Executive Director, Association of Ghana’s Elders (AGE), said members “cannot wait to reunite with their peers” as they did last year.
