One dead after Israeli attack in southern Lebanon, authorities say

Beirut, Sept 21, (dpa/GNA) – One person was killed in an Israeli attack in southern Lebanon, the authorities reported on Saturday.

The strike targeted the town of Hamul, not far from the border with Israel, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry. The victim was a Syrian citizen, it said.

The Israeli military said it was investigating the report. It was initially unclear whether the victim was a member of the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia.

There are concerns that the conflict between Hezbollah and the Israeli military, could develop into an open war, following the explosions of pagers and walkie-talkies on Tuesday and Wednesday, which are presumed to have been coordinated by Israel, and the Israeli airstrike on a suburb of the capital Beirut on Friday, which killed a high-ranking Hezbollah representative.

Israel has been exchanging fire with Hezbollah on a daily basis, since the beginning of its conflict with Palestinian militant organization Hamas, a Hezbollah ally, in Gaza almost one year ago.
