John Kpikpi vows to break Ghana’s political duopoly

By Jibril Abdul Mumuni

Accra, Aug. 6, GNA – Mr. John Kpikpi, a presidential candidate for the Progressive Alliance Ghana (PAG), has pledged to end Ghana’s political duopoly in the 2024 elections.

He said citizens had grown tired of failed promises and the lack of “transformational leadership” from the two major political parties that had ruled the country since the Fourth Republican Constitution was enacted.

The candidate was speaking at the confirmation ceremony for the party’s national executives and flagbearer.

The event was attended by party leaders, members, and executives.

Mr. Kpikpi stated that Ghana’s progress had been on a decline since the overthrow of Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

He said that Ghana now required leaders with a solid vision that resonated with Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s ideology, claiming that governments had long overlooked the fundamental concept that would transform the country: combating corruption and weak leadership.

Mr. Kpikpi said that he would tackle challenges facing various economic sectors, including industrialisation, agriculture, resources, ethics, and infrastructure.

Regarding agriculture, he decried Ghana’s reliance on food imports, despite the country’s vast fertile land.

“We are nearly seven decades into our freedom; we are still far from being able to cultivate our own food. I wonder what we have been doing with our large arable fields in the country. Our country currently spends nearly $300 million per year on food imports to feed ourselves,” he said.

Mr. Kpikpi mentioned that he intends to implement strategic steps to increase food security in the country.

He also pledged to revamp the country’s resource governance, emphasizing that Ghana must profit significantly from its natural resources under the current arrangement.
