GAF pays courtesy call on Sports Minister after World Championship success

Accra, Sept. 04, GNA – The Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF) has paid a courtesy call on Mr. Mustapha Ussif, Minister of Youth and Sports (MoYS) after securing a gold medal at the just-ended World Armwrestling Championship in Moldova.  

Golden Arms returned home with pride as the only Ghanaian team to win gold at a global event. 

Grace Minta, a two-time African champion stood to the test once again in the women’s 80kg left arm category to become the first-ever African woman to achieve that milestone, quenching Ghana’s thirst for a gold medal. 

Mr. Ussif speaking at a short ceremony congratulated Minta and the team for an outstanding performance just after scooping 41 medals at the African Games.  

He said government was committed to supporting Armwrestling, which had become the country’s only hope in winning medals at major events.  

“It is important that the Armwrestling President engage the international federation to get the sport as part of the Olympic sport for us to show the world what we are capable of doing,” he said.  

He charged the team to make good use of the facility provided to get themselves ready for global competitions.  

In his quest to help grow the sport, the Minister tasked GAF to form Armwrestling Clubs across the country as a way of unearthing young talents.  

Mr. Charles Osei Asibey, President of GAF pleaded with the Ministry to provide Golden Arms with a training center to boost their developmental plan.  

He assured that Armwrestling would win a gold medal for Ghana when given the nod to participate at the Olympics. 

Mr. Kofi Addo Agyekum, Vice President for Ghana Armwrestling Federation also thanked the Minister of Youth and Sports following his support to the Ghana Armwrestling Federation.
