First mpox vaccines donated from the EU to arrive in Congo

Brussels, Sept. 5, (dpa/GNA) – A first tranche of 100,000 mpox vaccine doses donated from the European Commission to affected countries is to arrive in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Thursday.

The commission and EU member states have pledged in total around 566,500 doses in an effort to halt the spread of the virus, a press release said.

“We know from the Covid-19 pandemic that we can only fight health threats such as mpox by working in partnership and global solidarity across borders,” said EU Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides.

Brussels plans to support affected countries in the fight against the disease with around €10 million ($11 million) in the coming months and has deployed two epidemiologists to the region.
