Tarkwa (W/R), Sept 9, GNA – The Coalition of Parents of Students in Private Institutions (COPOSIPI) has called on the government to take immediate and decisive action to address the illegal mining (galamsey) menace in the country.
The group said it was concerned about the devastating impact of illegal mining on the country’s water resources.
A statement issued by Dr Simon Gbene, the Executive Secretary of COPOSIPI, on Monday said the alarming rate of water pollution threatened the health and well-being of their children and the future of the nation.
“We propose that the Ghana Navy takes charge of securing our rivers and waterways to prevent further destruction. This measure will ensure effective monitoring and enforcement, allowing us to protect our water resources for future generations.
We are also asking the government to enact laws that will hold landowners responsible for any degradation on their lands and should be compelled to reclaim the land with the illegal miners” the statement added
The group also appealed to all stakeholders across the country to join forces to fight illegal miners, to preserve the environment and ensure a sustainable future for their children.
