Manso Nkwanta (Ash), Sept. 09, GNA – The Amansie West Inter-Party Dialogue Committee (IPDC) is seeking to promote peace before, during and after the 2024 general election through social events.
The committee intends to organise events such as peace walks, football gala, and symposia in communities as a strategy to engage citizens on the importance of maintaining peace as Ghana goes to the polls in December.
These were part of resolutions made by the committee to promote peace in the district at its inaugural meeting held at Manso Nkwanta.
The District Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) put together the committee made up of key stakeholders who have roles to play in ensuring peace throughout the electoral process.
Institutions such as the Ghana Police Service, Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Traditional Authorities, Electoral Commission, the Clergy, and political parties are represented on the committee.
The discussions during the maiden meeting of the committee focused on money in politics, political and religious tolerance, misinformation, disinformation, and political violence.
Beyond the events that would be organised by the committee as part of its peace sensitisation drive, it would also take advantage of public events where a lot of people converge to preach the message of peace.
Members elected interim executives and a finance team to spearhead activities of the committee and mobilise resources for the prosecution of the agenda of the committee.
Nana Gyimah Asante II, Chairman of the Committee, expressed appreciation to the entire committee for the various suggestions and implored them to work towards protecting the peace in the district.
He thanked them for confidence reposed in the executive, assuring that they would meet and draw up a roadmap towards maintaining peace in the district to serve as a guide for their activities.
Mr. Aziz Adjei Layea, the District Director of NCCE, said the formation of the committee formed part of the Commission’s mandate of promoting and sustaining democracy in Ghana.
He said it provided a common platform for key stakeholders to dialogue on issues that could potentially mar the upcoming election in the district.
“This is a true case of peace of the people, by the people and for the people,” he pointed out.
