Road crashes down in Ahafo Region

Goaso, (A/R), Aug. 23, GNA- Road crashes have reduced in the Ahafo Region between and June this year, Miss Indira Apronti, the Ahafo Regional Head of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has said. 

Comparatively, she said the region had recorded 58 cases of crashes in 2024 to the 64 cases reported in 2023 within the same period, a reduction of 22 per cent. 

The crashes killed 15 people in the 2024 cases as against 23 deaths recorded in the 2023 half-year, representing a 35 per cent reduction. 

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Goaso, the Ahafo Regional capital, Ms Apronti said 87 vehicles comprising commercial, private, and motorcycles were involved in the 2024 crashes with 101 vehicles involved in the previous year’s crashes. 

However, she said the region experienced a sharp increase in pedestrian knockdowns with 20 reported cases in the half year as compared to the eight cases in 2023, a 150 per cent increase. 

Additionally, 103 persons were injured in 2024, compared to 96 injuries within the same period in 2023, a seven per cent increase. 

Ms Apronti said the Authority had intensified road safety education outreaches in schools, churches, bus terminals and local communities to sensitise the masses about the “Stay Alive”, campaign to help bring the crashes under control. 

Additionally, the Authority has inaugurated the various District Road Committees to undertake road safety education outreaches at the district levels.
