Accra, Aug. 19, GNA – The Ghana Photojournalists Network (GPNeT) will celebrate the 2024 World Photography Day with students at the Tema Technical Institute (TTI) on August 19.
The celebration aims at helping students appreciate the benefits of Photojournalism to society and encourage them to become professional photojournalists.
The event, on the theme: “An Entire Day-Mentoring Young Photographers,” is being organised for members of the Network to share their knowledge and experience in Photojournalism with the photography students.
A statement issued in Accra by Mr Godfred Blay Gibbah, General Secretary of GPNeT, said the objectives of the Network included the continuous professional development of members, promotion of their welfare and the mentoring of young talents.
“This will be an excellent opportunity to give back to society as a considerable number of the Network’s members are old students of TTI,” it added.
It said the Day recognised the contribution of a French artist, Louis Daguerre, who perfected the Daguerreotype (a photograph made on silver covered copper sheets) on August 19, 1839.
“It is also used to create awareness about critical issues that affect our world. The Day is dedicated to the art, craft, science, and history of photography,” it said.
The statement said participants would tour a fish processing site, a residential area inundated by sea erosion as well the Chemu Lagoon to take pictures and interview stakeholders.
“Mr. David Andoh, President of GPNeT will make a presentation on ‘Photojournalism and its impact on society’, while Mr. Dan Nii Doudu Amo, an Executive Member of GPNeT, will discuss ‘Ethics and the safety of Photojournalists,’” it added.
GPNeT in 2020 collaborated with the Ministry of Information to mark the Day with photo exhibition on COVID-19, in 2022. it collaborated with the Forestry Commission to plant trees in Accra, while in 2023, it collaborated with the Ghana Tourism Authority to organise a photo walk at the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum in Accra.
