Ho, Aug. 23, GNA – Dr Archibald Yao Letsa, Volta Regional Minister, has underscored the importance of the Peace Council in promoting peace and security in the region.
He noted that the Peace Council had been instrumental in the region’s peace and security architecture.
Dr Letsa was speaking when officials of the British High Commission paid a courtesy call to him in Ho.
He said the Peace Council had helped resolve issues and other related concerns of which, other stakeholders had also helped to stabilise the security of the region.
The officials include Mr Dominic Howell, Political Counselor, Ms Aneesa Islam, the first Secretary-Elections and Mr Cecil A. Sampson, the Political Officer.
The purpose of the visit was to discuss matters relating to the upcoming elections, the dynamics of the operations of elections, opportunities in the region and broader politically related issues in Ghana.
Dr Letsa noted that the meeting also served as a valuable platform for diplomatic engagement between the United Kingdom and the Volta region of Ghana.
He said it also reaffirmed the commitment to bilateral relations and highlighted shared interests in promoting good governance and development.
Dr Letsa said the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) was responsible for security in the region and by extension the Eastern border of Ghana.
He said the Council worked with teams to ensure the maintenance of peace and stability in the region while sharing insights on best practices related to the elections in spite of the Ghana/Togo border issues.
Dr Letsa mentioned the involvement of the Peace Council and Election Security Committee which was headed by the Regional Police Commander and the political party’s representation.
He also used the opportunity to discuss the commercial opportunities in the region which included agriculture and tourism.
