Accra, Aug. 22, GNA – The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has held a financial management town hall meeting to showcase development projects since 2017.
The event was to deepen local governance and decentralisation by accounting to the people and soliciting their views.
Madam Elizabeth Kwastoe Tawiah Sackey, the Metropolitan Chief Executive, said the AMA, with support from the Government had implemented various programs to improve the social and economic conditions of the populace.
Engaging residents, opinion leaders, chiefs and other stakeholders from the Okaikai South District, Ablekuma SubMetro and Ashiedu Keteke, making up the Assembly, she said the Assembly had efficiently and judiciously used public funds.
On the education front, Madam Sackey said several projects, including the construction of a three-storey and nine-unit classroom block in Odododiodio, 18-unit classroom block for Independence Avenue Cluster of Schools, a two-unit kindergarten block for Bubiashie 1 Basic School and a childcare centre at Old Fadama were done.
She said 2,850 dual desks had been distributed to public basic schools in the Metropolis, adding that the declaration of Accra as the 2023 World Book Capital to promote reading had promoted the Assembly’s reading initiatives.
Mr Gilbert Nii Ankrah, Head of Public Affairs at the AMA, in a presentation, said construction of market sheds to accommodate 270 people at the 31st December Makola Market and the redevelopment of Salaga Market in Ussher Town were ongoing.
He said the Adedenkpo and Fearon roads had been improved with asphaltic overlays, about 3.1 kilometres and adding that health services in the community had been enhanced with the expansion of Ussher Hospital in Jamestown.
“The installation of streetlights in Jamestown and Bukom has improved safety and security. The desilting of drains and multiple clean-up exercises in areas like Agbogbloshie and London Market, have significantly contributed to maintaining a cleaner city environment,” he said.
Projects undertaken at the Ablekuma South Sub-Metropolitan Council include the construction of a water closet toilet facility at Mamprobi-Sempe Cluster of Schools and the development of an astroturf at Mamprobi Girls School.
Construction of a two-storey maternity/theatre block at Kaneshie Polyclinic, construction of a storage facility at Mamprobi Polyclinic and the asphaltic overlay of Mantse Kwao Road, covering a length of 1.5 km had been undertaken.
