Ekuano Assemblyman calls for infrastructural development

By Patrick Obeng

Accra, July 23, GNA—Mr Benjamin Kwaku Kumi, Assemblyman for Ekuano Electoral Area in the Akuapem South District of the Eastern Region, has appealed to the government to provide the community with infrastructural development to help improve upon the standard of living.

He noted that infrastructure provided the foundation for economic activities, yet the pace of investment has fallen and hindered economic growth.

Mr Kumi, an Executive Member of the Ayensuano Constituency of the National Democratic Congress, made the call in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Tuesday.

He said appeals to the Akuapem South District Assembly for the rehabilitation of the Abehu-Kojohum Road, but all has fallen into deaf ears.

“Anytime it rains the road becomes unmotorable thus denying the communities of their daily activities,” Mr. Kumi said.

He said from roads and transportation to water and waste transport, infrastructure enables the economy to function.

“Many people drink water with unhealthy levels of toxic chemicals, heavy metals, bacteria and other contaminants,” he said.

Mr. Kumi said due to the nature of the road criminals take advantage of that and consistently attack and rob traders and other road users of their belongings.

He said the worst experience was that the residents were often cut off during rainy seasons, which was a major worry to them.

Mr. Kumi, known in political circles as “Abomigyee”, said these developments had left residents of the community stranded and put emergency services such as medical referrals at risk.

‘Due to the situation pregnant women and individuals with medical emergencies requiring referrals to other medical centres were often stranded resulting in the loss of lives’, he said.

“I, therefore, appeal for the immediate fixing of the road to help improve healthcare and other socio-economic activities,” Mr Kumi added.
