Accra, Dec 5, GNA – Madam Rita Odoley Sowah, the Member of Parliament (MP) for La Dade Kotopon Constituency, Wednesday organised a health screening exercise for persons with disabilities (PWDs), in the area at no cost to them.
The exercise was a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) gesture of the MP, in partnership with the La Municipal Health Directorate as part of activities to mark World PWDs Day which fell on Sunday, December 3.
The beneficiaries were screened for various health conditions, including, blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels among others.
They also received relevant medication and counselling, while others were referred for further treatment.
As part of the exercise, the MP provided, also, breakfast for the beneficiaries.
In an interview, with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Madam Sowah underscored the need for regular medical screening and check-ups for PWDs, stating that “the exercise was to offer PWDs the opportunity to have their health checked for potential health issues and to get treatment for minor conditions.”
She said, her mission was to ensure that her constituents, especially PWDs have access to quality healthcare irrespective of their economic situations.
Mr Anthony Adarkwa, Chairman, Ghana Federation of the Disability Organization at La, expressed gratitude to the MP for organizing the programme which ensured that the health statuses of PWDs were known.
He stated how difficult it is for some of them to seek medical care, adding, “we took advantage of the program to access basic health care.”
Commending the MP for the gesture, Mr Adarkwa urged other MPs to emulate the Madam Sowah and assist in providing convenient healthcare for PWDs in their constituencies.
Madam Josephine Nettey, the Accountant at the La Municipal Health Directorate commended the MP for the exercise, noting that it would go a long way to complement their work to provide quality health care service for PWDs in the constituency.
