Accra, Nov. 30, GNA – The top brass of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) Thursday called on the leadership of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) at the Ghana International Press Centre, Accra.

The visit follows one by the GJA leadership on the Military High Command in September.

The meeting provided an opportunity for the two parties to explore how the military and the media could work together to promote peace and stability in the country.

Mr Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, President of the GJA, stated that the military was an important partner in the Association’s activities and that the visit would enhance their relationship.

He commended the military high command for its tact and civility in dealing with complaints of foul reportage against them, while also chastising some of its soldiers who attacked journalists.

Mr Dwumfour advised other institutions to follow the military’s lead in dealing with journalistic misconduct by using civil remedies in the face of provocation.

“You don’t need to attack journalists when you don’t agree with them or their reportage,” he added.

Mr Dwumfour also advised journalists to always be professional in their work and to follow the profession’s ethical standards.

He stated that the military high command had petitioned the GJA over the unprofessional behaviour of Captain Smart, a journalist and that the matter had been forwarded to the Association’s Ethics and Disciplinary Council for review.

“We believe in the competence of the Council constituted by Article 42 of the Association’s Constitution and made up of eminent personalities to bring out the right report,” he added.

Vice Admiral Seth Amoama, Chief of Defence Staff, GAF, lauded the Association for its friendly reception and expressed optimism that the ties between them would strengthen further.

The GJA President presented a plaque to the Chief of Defence Staff in gratitude of the GAF’s cooperation and friendship with journalists.

He also presented copies of this year’s GJA Awards brochure to the CDS.
