Yeji, (BE/R) Oct.23, GNA – Nana Agyemang Prempeh, the Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) on Monday presented some relief items to victims affected by flooding in the Pru East District of the Bono Region.
The spillage of the Bagre Dam in neighbouring Burkina Faso has affected more than 12 fishing communities around the Volta Lake in the District and displaced about 2,554 people.
Torrential rains in the area had also worsened the situation, with Fantiekura, Pentecost Nsuano, Adiembra number three, Bayawaya, Vutidekey, Agorkope and parts of Tokyobike,Logakope,Dzatakpo,Vorkope.
During a visit to the affected communities to assess the impact of the disaster, he said the items, including 300 mattresses, quantities of buckets, cups, bowls, and food items were government’s intervention to help in the upkeep of the victims.
The food items comprised bags of rice and maize, cooking oils and other consumables. “The government is really committed to ensuring that all the affected people are supported to live a decent life”, he said.
Mr Kwasi Adu-Gyan, the Bono East Regional Minister, and the Chairman of the Bono East Regional Security Council who received the items on behalf of the affected communities, expressed worry that some people continued to stay in flood prone areas, despite intensified public education on the need for them to evacuate.
“Issues of flooding keep recurring, but it’s unfortunate some of these residents are adamant to vacate the communities”, he said, and advised other residents along the White Volta to leave the area in their own interest.
Pimempim Yaw Kabrese IV, the Paramount Chief of the Yeji Traditional Area, thanked the government and the NADMO for the support saying the Council was collaborating with the Pru East District Assembly to relocate the affected communities.
