Accra, Dec. 22, GNA – The police have arrested one Kwame Simon Mensah, a self-styled field investigator, posing as a staff of the Electricity Company of Ghana Ltd (ECG).

The arrest follows a tip-off on the activities of the middle-aged man, said to be taking money from unsuspecting customers of the Company.

Investigations by the police have revealed that over the past two years, the suspect allegedly regularly visited the Agbogbloshie market and extorted money from traders with threats to disconnect their meters.

A news brief said the suspect possessed a fake ID card bearing the name of the Company, his name and designation as a “field investigator”.

Speaking to the media after the arrest, the ECG Korle-Bu District Manager, Mr. Solomon Tsawe, advised the Company’s customers to be cautious of activities of criminals, especially during the festive season.

He said customers must always verify the identity of staff who visited their premises to conduct operations.

“Our staff do not demand money on the field for the activities we undertake, and we always carry valid ID cards and other official Company branded paraphernalia when we visit customers, ” Mr. Tsawe said.

He said anytime customers were suspicious of the activities of anyone, they should immediately inform the nearest office or police station for intervention.

Mr. Tsawe hinted of ongoing engagements with the security agencies to identify and root out the activities of criminals who posed as staff of the Company to dupe the public.

The suspect is in police custody.
