Gift from Ukraine explodes in Polish police chief office

Warsaw, Dec 15, (dpa/GNA) – A gift, given to the head of the Polish police force during a working visit to Ukraine, exploded at police headquarters, the Interior Ministry in Warsaw said on Thursday.

Police chief Jaroslaw Szymczyk, suffered minor injuries in the explosion, and was taken to hospital. A civilian employee was also slightly injured, but did not require medical treatment.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, the explosion occurred on Wednesday morning, in a room next to Szymczyk’s office.

According to the statement, it was triggered by “one of the gifts the police commander received during his working visit to Ukraine on 11 and 12 December this year.”

There, he had met the leadership of the Ukrainian police and civil protection. The gift that has now exploded was given to Szymczyks by a head of a Ukrainian authority, he said.

Poland has asked the Ukrainian side for explanations about the incident. The public prosecutor’s office is investigating it.

At the beginning of December, a series of letter bombs in Spain made headlines, possibly linked to the Ukraine conflict.
