2022 FIFA WC: Uruguay’s group stage exit leaves Suarez in tears

Doha, Qatar, Dec.3, GNA – Uruguayan forward, Luis Suarez was left in tears at the Al Janoub Stadium in Doha after his side missed out on the round of 16 slots of the 2022 FIFA World Cup despite picking a 2-0 win against Ghana.

The forward, who managed to get two goal involvements against the Ghanaian side, was of high hopes his team would make it to the next stage of the competition, having given Ghana a tough challenge in the first half of the game.

News from the Education City Stadium after South Korea took the lead against Portugal in a late drama, saw tears fall from the face of the former Atletico Madrid striker, as he pulled his shirt over his head in dismay.

The excitement on the faces of the Ghanaian fans at the stadium despite the Black Stars’ elimination from the Mundial was an indication of how long they had waited to pay the striker back as they cheered anytime his face was shown on the big screen shedding tears.

This boils down to 2010 when Suarez left a mark on Ghana’s football memories, pulling off a goal that could have seen Ghana make history as the only African country to make it to the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup with his hand.

Former Black Stars Skipper, Asamoah Gyan took the bold step to take the penalty for Ghana, but unfortunately missed it as the South Americans went on to eliminate Ghana from the 2010 World Cup quarterfinals in a penalty shootout.

The Black Stars again failed to pick up a positive result against Uruguay when they needed at least a draw to sail through to the next stage.

Ghana and Uruguay have now been kicked out of the 2022 FIFA World Cup as Portugal and South Korea join the 14 other teams who would compete for the coveted trophy.
