Tema, Nov. 17, GNA – Mr Abraham Koomson, Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), has called for unity among Labour Unions to protect the interest and well-being of workers.
The GFL Secretary-General said unity among the Labour Unions would ensure they fight collectively for the working conditions of workers to promote individual, family and community well-being.
Mr Koomson was analyzing the labour front at the 17th edition of the Stakeholders Engagement and Worker’s Appreciation Day Seminar of the Tema Regional Office of the Ghana News Agency.
The GNA Tema Stakeholder Engagement is a platform for state and non-state actors to address national issues.
Mr Koomson said it was time the unions come together to fight for higher wages, consider working hours and look at workplace hazards protection and other factors.
He said most companies were taking advantage of the unemployment situation in the country and engaging the citizens, particularly the youth without employment letters and poor conditions of service.
He, therefore, charged workers’ unions to fight against such practices to protect the workers from being misused by employers.
The endless splintering of the workforce was undermining the bargaining positions of workers in the country and only serve to empower employers to manipulate the work force.
“If a union cannot handle grievances of its members, and they have to seek help outside indirectly we are relegating our own responsibilities to another entity and that is very dangerous,” Mr Koomson added.
