Copenhagen, Nov. 2, (dpa/GNA) - Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen submitted the resignation of her government to Queen Margrethe II on Wednesday, a move she had announced following parliamentary elections the previous day.
Danish media footage showed the Social Democrat arriving on Wednesday morning at Amalienborg Palace, the queen’s Copenhagen residence, and leaving again shortly afterwards, without speaking to the media.
At a debate with the other parliamentary party leaders, she later confirmed that she had submitted the resignation request, adding that it was clear the government could not continue in its current form.
Frederiksen has led Denmark since 2019 with a Social Democratic minority government, which has mostly relied on support in parliament from left-leaning parties.
In a dramatic vote count, the left-leaning red camp achieved a last-minute majority, prompting Frederiksen to announce her resignation.
The move paves the way to determining which party leader should be tasked with forming a new government – a role that is expected to go to Frederiksen again.
She could then explore the possibilities for a broad government spanning the political centre – a rarity in Denmark.
Her second option would be to rely on the red bloc’s extremely thin majority of 90 of the 179 seats, achieved only by taking into account three mandates from Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
