Renew NHIS cards with mobile renewal service – Dr Okoe Boye

Accra, Aug. 18, GNA – Dr Okoe Boye, Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority, has called on the public to renew their National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) membership cards with the Mobile Renewal Service.

The code to utilise the service is *929#, he said, adding that the NHIS remained the surest way to reduce out-of-pocket payment of healthcare services.

Dr Boye gave the advice while attending to patients at the LEKMA Hospital in Accra after re-appropriating his timetable to do general consulting services, a statement from the NHIA copied to the Ghana News Agency, said.

It said 17 of the patients he dealt with were active members of NHIS.

Dr Boye also entreated members of the public who had not registered for the Scheme to get enrolled and take advantage of the generous benefits package it provided.

The statement said that the CEO said the upward adjustment of NHIA medicine tariffs by some 30 per cent was to ensure that health facilities had essential drugs for the public.

The NHIS is a critical funding source for many public healthcare providers and Lekma Hospital like many other health facilities, the statement said, was heavily reliant on NHIS card bearers whose patronage constituted over 80 per cent of their internally generated funds to sustain the running of the facility.

Dr Boye, also a former Member of Parliament for the Ledzokuku constituency was appointed by President Akufo-Addo to serve as the NHIA’s new Chief Executive.

The Governing Board on May 3, 2022, outdoored him in pursuant to Section 14 (1) of the National Health Insurance Act, 2012 (Act 852) after he took over from Dr Lydia Dsane-Selby who was in charge since 2019.

The statement said Dr Boye’s vision was to make the NHIA, the most visible and reliable public organization with the most vibrant staff and as well evaluate the current structure of the Authority to make the NHIS more efficient.

He also promised to execute what he described as the 5Ds@2D agenda as the NHIS 20th Anniversary would be marked in 2023.

The 5Ds@2D is Digitization, Development, Data, Dissemination, and Decentralization at 20 years of the existence of the NHIS.
