Methodist Church Ghana elects New Lay President

Winneba(C/R), Aug. 22, GNA – The Methodist Church Ghana has elected Mr  Kwesi Atta Antwi as the next Lay President of the Church at its 50th Annual and 12th Biennial Conference in Winneba in the Central Region. 

Mr Atta Antwi was elected after a run-off election. 

The newly-elected Lay President is a member of the Wesley Society, Kumasi in the Kumasi Circuit of the Kumasi Diocese, and had served the Church in several capacities at various levels. 

He polled 256 votes, representing 68.63 per cent of ballots cast to go pass his closest contender, Madam Grace Nkrumah-Mills of the Wesley Society, Akosombo in the Akosombo Circuit of the Somanya Diocese, who secured 117 votes representing 31.37 per cent. 

The Lay President of the Church is mandated by the Methodist Constitution to assist the Presiding Bishop in giving leadership to the Church in addition to carrying out duties that may be assigned to him/her by Conference and by the Presiding Bishop. 

He/she also presides over the Representative Session of Conference and General Directorates in the absence of the Presiding Bishop. 

The Lay President-elect, who is a Past Lay Chairman of the Kumasi Diocese and a Management Consultant, will take office from October 2023, when the three-year mandate of the incumbent, Bro William Orleans Oduro [Esq] expires.
