Japanese Prime Minister Kishida tests positive for coronavirus

Tokyo, Aug 21, (dpa/GNA) – Japanese Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida, has tested positive for the coronavirus, and is showing mild symptoms such as a slight fever and cough, his office announced on Sunday.

The 65-year-old, who had received his fourth coronavirus vaccination on August 12, had planned to return to work on Monday after a holiday.

He must now quarantine until August 30, but will continue his official duties, unless his symptoms worsen, the officials said.

Coronavirus infection levels are currently reaching new heights in Japan, as the country experiences its seventh wave.

Kishida was supposed to travel to Tunisia next week for an Africa conference, and then to the Middle East.
