Ferry adrift off Swedish coast safely arrives at destination

Copenhagen, Aug 30, (dpa/GNA) – A Swedish ferry that was drifting, after losing power with hundreds on board, has safely arrived at the port of Nynäshamn in Sweden.

Swedish broadcasters on Tuesday showed two tugboats assisting the ship, as it entered the harbour.

Fire broke out on Monday in a refrigerated container on the car deck of the Stena Scandica ferry, which was carrying 299 people.

The flames were quickly extinguished, but caused a power outage, that left the vessel drifting slowly towards the island of Gotland in strong coastal winds.

Emergency crews used helicopters to bring passengers to safety, with priority given to bringing families with children and older people to shore first.

Shortly before the boat drifted onto land, the ferry crew managed to start two engines and moved the vessel north, away from Gotland.

The vessel, with assistance, then set off at a slow pace towards Nynäshamn on Monday evening.

The Stena Scandica was en route from Ventspils in Latvia to Nynäshamn south of Stockholm, and was near the small Swedish island of Gotska Sandön when the fire broke out.
